The importance of mindfulness in the corporate world

Talking about meditation in the corporate sphere has become increasingly natural, as managers and entire teams have noticed the benefits of the practice.

Faced with high demands to deliver results, time-consuming and exhausting meetings and the need to meet targets, taking time out to look after yourself, notice your body, your breathing and silence your mind from external and internal noise has been vital in dealing with extremely stressful and tiring realities.

The environment and lifestyle you lead directly affect your health and productivity at work. It's a domino effect of demands that leads to collective exhaustion.

In such scenarios, the level of the stress hormone cortisol rises and decision-making and problem-solving worsen, compromising not only the health of the company, but also that of the employees.

Great leaders such as Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have stated that meditation, especially Mindfulness, helped them to be more focused and productive in their tasks.

At first it may seem complex and unattainable, but with practice it becomes easier, simpler and more natural. And the benefits are felt not only by employees, who enjoy a better quality of life, health and changed routines, but also by companies, which consequently see the changes reflected in their results.

You don't need a lot of time or to sit in the lotus position to start practicing. Mindfulness, a practice that I study, teach and apply in my life, brings us to a state of presence and full awareness in the here and now, no matter where or how you are. We can practice it from waking up to going to bed, including during meals, which is the case with Mindful Eating. In addition, it is secular, not associated with religions or any kind of belief, and it was developed with the support of science and continues to be the subject of research around the world.

Creator Jon Kabat-Zin defines it as "The awareness or mental state that arises from intentionally paying attention to a present experience or phenomenon, without judging, criticizing or reacting to it".

Silence and conscious breathing are the threads that lead us to this state of presence and peace.
