Fighting Burnout: The Role of Mindfulness in Prevention and Resilience

O burnoutwas initially defined as a psychological syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and loss of personal fulfillment in professionals who work with people. But what does that mean?

Since 2022, the WHO, with the 11th edition of the ICD, has recognized the burnout as a syndrome related to professional burnout as a result of chronic stress that is not properly managed. Its main manifestations are emotional and physical exhaustion, cynicism and professional ineffectiveness.

Today we have a broader view, redefined as a crisis in work relations. Experts say that burnout is not synonymous with occupational stress, but stems from it. In other words, an inability to deal with occupational stressors and a lack of coping strategies, such as excessive workload, toxic human interactions, a disorganized work environment, insufficient pay and benefits, conflicts with leadership, low autonomy in carrying out the work, etc.

As you can see, the syndrome emerges from various factors that are interrelated and will inevitably affect individuals depending on their personal, socio-cultural and professional context. Maslach and Leiter (1997) believe that the burnout is not primarily a problem intrinsic to the person, but is fundamentally the result of the characteristics of the organization's social environment, which is why there is a strong relationship between the organizational climate and the burnout

The implementation of occupational health services in companies, such as the practice of Mindfulness, has expanded its insertion in these spaces, thus providing a primary role in the control of risk factors. burnoutThese can be decisive in preventing illness and promoting workers' health. In order to preserve human resources, wellbeing programs and interventions should have an impact on reducing costs for the worker and their family, for the company and on increasing productivity and quality of life for everyone involved. It is difficult to know objectively what the quantitative impact has been on actions which, as well as being immeasurable, take time for staff to engage with and even longer to change the organizational culture, often rooted for decades and encouraged by an increasingly competitive society.

That's why the sooner your company can implement an awareness program, the further ahead it will be in this race against the burnout. Give your employees access to tools that help them manage their emotions! We encourage you to select a Mindfulness facilitator/instructor who has experience with the subject. The founder of Flow of Life and our main teacher, Danielle Wang, suffered from burnout in 2015 and sought help from the roots of ancient traditions. Today she translates into modern, accessible language a simplistic way of introducing Mindfulness practices to transform lives, people and purposes.
